El Salvador Cuisine

The national cuisine of El Salvador can be simple and extraordinary at the same time. In El Salvador you can eat common chicken dishes such as a chicken soup or exotic fried palm flowers. Many dishes in El Salvador are made with maize (corn).

Local specialties include popusas (corn tortillas stuffed with cheese, meat, squash, and other fillings), tamales Salvadoreños (tamales stuffed with chicken and potatoes), Pavo Salvadoreño (roast turkey with sauce), chicharrón (pork crackling), mariscada (creamy seafood soup).

The locals eat a lot of fruit. The most popular are plantains that are usually fried. One of the most popular drinks in El Salvador is Chicha prepared with fermented pineapple peel, cashew, or nance fruit.
